Why "Caprock"? Caprock is a geological term for a layer of erosion resistant rock that in time may become the top layer of a canyon landscape. As such, it is a good metaphor for a quality product of lasting value. More personally, it is the name of a canyon system in the Texas Panhandle that enchanted me in my younger years, and excites me to this day when I go there. It has a spare, serene beauty that I hope to evoke with my design work, and a timelessness that great landscapes and great craft have in common.
I began work in the building trades during my college years in Austin, Texas in the mid-1970's. I moved to northern California after graduating from the University of Texas and found work as a carpenter, specializing in trimwork for homes and remodels. Within a few years I entered business for myself, designing and building custom furniture and cabinetry.
In 1994, I moved to Boulder, Colorado and began to work in larger shops. The mechanization and computerization of these shops provided new perspectives on work methods along with the challenges of large-scale projects. I gained invaluable experience engineering, milling, benching, and installing millwork for the corporate and public sectors and high-end private residences.
In 2002, I went back to small-shop work, designing and building distinctive furniture and residential cabinetry. Moreover, I expanded my skill set to include CAD drafting, applying the knowledge I have gained over my career to millwork engineering and creating clear and user-friendly shop drawings for the woodwork industry.
